Building USD Simulation Scenes from Reusable Assets

Updated October 1, 20262 minsimgenerator Team

Keep the scene and its source assets distinct

An environment is more than several objects placed together. Your scene also defines their relationships, initial states and the conditions under which the robot interacts with them.

USD references let a scene reuse content from other files. A useful authoring practice is to keep supplied asset packages intact and put task-specific changes in a scene layer. This makes it easier to update an asset and understand which decisions belong to the experiment.

Establish a small working scene

Start with one task area and a few representative assets. Check units, orientation and dependency paths before filling the room. Use a known dimension or robot model to inspect scale. Resolve missing textures or references immediately so they do not become harder to isolate later.

Create a stable naming and prim-path convention for objects the task will address. Document it alongside the initial poses, rather than expecting a controller to identify objects from the rendered image or file name alone.

Review interactions between assets

A drawer that works on its own may collide with another object after scene assembly. A navigation route may be blocked by a collider that was invisible in the beauty render. Test the assembled environment with the robot's expected footprint, reach and sensor positions.

Our recommended scene review covers:

  1. Dependency resolution from a fresh project location.
  2. Correct placement and scale of task-relevant objects.
  3. Initial intersections and unstable arrangements.
  4. Required joint motion and contact clearances.
  5. Labels and paths used by the task.
  6. A repeatable reset and representative interaction.

Package the result so it can be repeated

Record source asset revisions and keep the task scene, required dependencies and test notes together. Where scene complexity becomes a problem, evaluate USD payloads and instancing around your editing and runtime needs. Measure the resulting scene instead of assuming a particular structure is always faster.

The SimReady Packager bundles supplied content and reports findings; it does not guarantee that every assembled interaction passes. Pair packaging with the environment quality checklist. For a facility-specific environment, talk to our digital twin team.
